IBM’s Power6 spotted bashing Oracle at 4.7GHz

With 4.7GHz chips (4MB of L2 and 32MB of L3 cache), an IBM p570 server showed an average response time of .625 seconds when handling requests from 2,100 users. That compares to a p570 with 2.2GHz Power5+ chips that handled .983 requests per second for 2,000 users.

Wow, those are some impressive numbers. Enough to make your hair stand on end!
I think it is great that IBM is cranking out the Si.. The POWER series is an awesome chip. With the POWER 6 IBM has managed to bring a great deal of power to the server space and they did so while coming in under their power requirements. The chief of chip design said it would be “technically infeasible” to use dark matter to power the chips at present time, and you know what? They made it happen. No dark matter was used at all, and the cooling apparatus only required a small electromagnetic containment field and a proprietary liquid helium cooling unit.
I say it is a small price to pay for 32MB L3 cache, and a 0.625 response time under that kind of load.
