Now that the final salvo, which appears in modern business as a payoff, has been “fired”, sources from deep within the bright, sunny, eternally temperate DeAnza blvd. location have informed us that the next MacPro update will bring some changes to the beloved aluminum-clad desktop behemoth.Sources are telling us under cloak of night that the next revision of the MacPro will include a Blu-Ray super drive standard with the option of adding a second. They note now that the uncertainity has passed, Apple is going full press with the drive across all lines, with “Pro” adoption first, and “Consumer” options closer to Christmas, or perhaps the new year.It will also likely feature Intels recently leaked Nehalem platform. This will offer a considerable boost in performance. This new platform is huge for both Intel and Apple as it represents the first Intel chipset with an integrated memory controller, which should reduce latency in RAM. This has long been an advantage that AMD had over Intel. It also will support DDR-3 and feature a new interconnect system that seems to be strangely similar to HyperTransport. Coincidence? Apple is a member of the Hyper-Transport consortium and Intel and Apple have made several hints that collaborative projects. This technology/chipset will likely filter down to the iMacs and MacBooks/MacBook Pros as well. More minor updates include a yet unnamed graphics update with 512MB VRAM standard with a 768MB and 1.5 GB upgrade options.Still more interestingly, they off hints that this next revision, which may come some time around WWDC 2008, will offer a redesign of the currently 5 year old tower design. Details on this last piece of information was lacking.
